We have some fantastic news to share...  First of all, thanks to our Chairwoman, Ms. Tumenbayar, we reached out to one of the “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” nominees as chosen by WIM UK, Ms. Oyun Sanjaasuren, Minister of the Environment and Green Development Ministry, Member of the Mongolian Parliament, and President of the Mongolian Geological Association.

We are proudly & kindly welcoming Ms. Oyun Sanjaasuren as WIM Mongolia’s first Honorary Advisor to our organization

Ms. Oyun is a Mongolian Member of Parliament and a leading female politician. Her background in mining following her PhD in Geology at Cambridge has uniquely positioned her to focus on the development of Mongolia's extremely rich soil. Ms. Oyun graduated in geochemistry at the Charles University of Prague. In 1996, she earned a PhD in Geology from the University of Cambridge. She began her career at multinational mining company Rio Tinto and then transitioned into politics, following her brother, a prominent Mongolian politician in the 1990s. Ms. Oyun founded the Civil Will Party and has chaired a number of key standing committees, focusing in particular on legislation to improve anti-corruption, election financing and the Millennium Development Goals. In 2006, Ms. Oyun was selected as a Young Global Leader (YGL) by Davos World Economic Forum (WEF). She has been an active member of the YGL community since.

Ms. Oyun has demonstrated leadership in both the political and business realms. Having started her new post as a Minister of Environment and Green Development, she is committed to implementing new regulations to protect the mining environment. The mining environment is one of the crucial issues in the recent Mongolian mining boom and Ms. Oyun stands out as a leader in this area.

Second, we have finalized our five-member Board of Directors. At the moment, we are proudly represented by two foreign ladies, one from Australia and one representing China/Hong Kong, two Mongolian women located in USA and Canada, a Mongolian expat working in UB at Rio Tinto and four prominent Mongolian professionals from a leading law firm, a management consulting firm, senior lawyer at MCS (one of the best managed Mongolian world class company which is involved in Mongolian managed coking coal mining) and a capital markets professional/expert from FRC (Mongolian Financial Regulatory Commission). With this diverse background, we are aiming to have inclusive decision-making expertise at our organization. The structure of the organization will take the form of a roundtable and not that of a top-down military like organization.  We’ll be meeting in March and sign our incorporation act!!! Stay tuned in March for further details of WIM Mongolia.

Lastly, we will be attending our first international conference from March 2-5th in Toronto, Canada. We are part of the Mongolia@PDAC 2014 event on March 4th, 2014. The venue is the King II Room, Mezzanine Level, Hyatt Regency Toronto on King Street, a short walk from the Toronto Convention Centre.  On March 4, registration check-in starts at 1:00 PM; speakers, panels, and Q&A, 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM; networking reception, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. If you have any questions about the program, contact Counselor Maxim Berdichevsky, Canadian Embassy/UB (maxim.berdichevsky@international.gc.ca) Steve Saunders, NAMBC (steve@nambc.org) or Bolor Sambuu, WIM Mongolia at wimmongolia@gmail.com.

Happy International Women’s Day on March 8th !
