In March 2017, Women in Mining organizations from Singapore, Mongolia, Philippines and British Columbia, Canada, have partnered to organize the Women in Mining Day during Mining Investment Asia 2017 which was held in Singapore.

It was the first regional panel to relook the issues related to gender diversity and inclusion in the mining industry within the Asia Pacific region. With ever increasing proportion of women in the extractive industries around the world, it is becoming more frequent for the industry professionals to gather and discuss the issues faced by women in this conventionally male dominated sector and recognize the achievements of women

WIM Mongolia is looking forward to the next international Women in Mining Day!

November 2016 News

Dear WIM Mongolia members & followers,

In October 2016, WIM Mongolia held two consultative meetings at the Cooperative Vocational Training in the Mineral Resources Sector (CVT) project, which is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and jointly financed by the governments of Germany, Switzerland and Australia. The project aims at supporting Mongolian youth and adults to improve their employability in the mineral resource sector. Among others, the project encourages girls and women to get vocational training in mining-related fields through providing scholarships and organizing Girls’ Days.

The first meeting involved the presentation of the WIMM’s 2015-2016 survey of the women participation in the extractive industry of Mongolia with the project management team. Among them the project gender focal point Ms.Oyunsanaa stressed the importance of various interventions of sector specific projects in Mongolia, especially in cross cutting topics such as mining, gender and inclusive education. The second meeting was held with the regional experts from the partnering vocational training schools from 11 provinces of Mongolia. Discussants shared opinions on the findings of the survey, ways to jointly improve the situation of girl’s enrollment in the mining vocational training and in WIMM’s mentorship program.

The German Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Mongolian Ministry of Labour and Social Protection have been jointly implementing this project since 2013, which started the second project phase in 2016.

January 2016 News

Dear WIM Mongolia members & followers,

Two exciting projects are set to be launched in Mongolia’s mining industry. A consortium composed of Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC) will be in charge of the design and implementation of Enhancing Resource Management through Institutional Transformation (MERIT) initiative while the Strengthening Extractive Sector Management in Mongolia (SESMIM) project will be carried out by Agriteam Canada.

Women in Mining Mongolia (WIMM) is partnering locally with CESO, one of Canada's leading volunteer-based development organizations whose mission is to catalyze and strengthen sustainable economic and social growth.  The MERIT project is a multi-year initiative that will enhance public sector management of the Mongolian extractive sector in order to maximize its contribution to both sustainable economic and social development.

Recently, the WIMM executive team met with CESO and Agriteam representatives to discuss and share our vision of the projects’ strategies. We look forward to working together toward a mutually beneficial success.

Ms. N.Tumenbayar
Chairwoman, WIM Mongolia

Dear WIM Mongolia members,

As we wrap up 2015, it is a great time to reflect on what WiMM has accomplished over the past 12 months.

Last year was a year of growth for our association. We continued fruitfully by connecting with both old and new friends and by partnering with organizations in Mongolia and around the globe. Through WiMM’s collaborations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Canada as well as with Canada Mongolia Chamber of Commerce, we succeeded in nominating three Mongolian mid-level professional women to participate in the intergovernmental forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development organized by the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute. We reached out to four mining schools in Mongolia to organize the guest speakers series and to collaborate in joint research projects as well as the SwissAid Sustainable Artisanal Mining Project which connected women to artisanal miners.

The World Bank noted in its 2013 paper that there exists a scarcity of research and data on women’s participation in the mining sector of Mongolia. Understanding that better data and research on the roles of Mongolian women contributing to the mining sector should facilitate the government’s mining and gender policies, in March through to August 2015, WiMM carried out a survey on the role of women in the country’s extractive industry covering 8,400 people from the mining labour force. The preliminary research data show many exciting facts, interesting findings and conclusions. For example, the share of women in the mining industry’s workforce is more than 30 percent which is well above similar numbers in many other predominantly mining economies, and the share of women working at a top, decision-making level is 17 percent which is above the world average for that matter. In the coming months, WiMM is planning to hold a roundtable to introduce and discuss the findings of this research and to seek funding for the publication and distribution of these results.

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season, and prosperous 2016!

Chairwoman,

WIM Mongolia September News

Dear WIM Mongolia Members & Followers:

The 2nd Annual Breakfast meeting was held during Discover Mongolia 2014 on September 5th at Rosewood Coffee House in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The agenda of the meeting was to announce the official registration of WIMM and introduce members of its first Board of Directors.

First 7 Board of Directors and Executive Team:

1. Ms. Tumenbayar Nyamaa, Chairwoman
2. Mrs. Bolor Sambuu, Vice-Chair
3. Mrs. Tugsjargal Tumen, Executive Director
4. Ms. Bulgan Altangerel, Director
5. Ms. Isabel Cane, Director
6. Mrs. Bolor Erdene, Director
7. Mrs. Otgonchimeg Dunkhersuren, Director

Moreover, a new initiative, piloted this past summer, a Mentorship Program, was introduced to our newly established board as well as to our Advisory Council and to future mentors. The advisory council was represented by Dr. Graeme Hancock, President and Chief Representative of Anglo American.

This event was by invite only and we had the opportunity to invite a few future members as well as mentors such as Mr. Enkh-Amgalan Myagmar, Head of Legal Department at ETT, Mr. Tsenguun Tsogt, CHPP Project Manager at ETT, Ms. Oyundelger Purev, Execute Finance Director at MoEnCo, Ms. Munkhtuya N., Project coordinator at OT.

Our Mentorship Programming Committee consists of Ms. Bulgan Altangerel, Mrs. Bolor Erdene., Ms. Hulan Zalaa-Uul, Mrs. Bolor Sambuu and Mrs. Otgonchimeg Dunkhersuren.  They introduced the Mentorship Program process and its business plan to the Board.  During the event, Dr. Graeme recommended potential mentors. Both the Board and the Advisory council supported this newly initiated program and showed great interest in assisting WIMM to attract sponsorship.

This event wouldn't be possible without help of WIMM first mentees which included Ms. Sondor Dorj, Ms. Hulan Zalaa-Uul and Ms. Enke Gendendorj. We selected these mentees inter alia on the basis of their interest in taking part of the growing community of Mongolian women in mining. They are representing sectors such as commercial law, environmental consulting, and international development.

In addition, WIMM collaborates with other student organizations such as Glueckauf.mn. Mr. Margad Togtokhbayar, who is a founding member of this organization, reached out WIMM in the interest of  60% female students members. We are developing a strategic plan to partner with this newly established non-profit organization run by Mongolians studying mining in Germany.

We are energized by the newly established Board and please stay tuned for more news!

We appreciate the representatives from the most influential companies in the Mongolian mining sector for interest and participation:

Anglo American, Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC, Mongolyn Alt (MAK) LLC, Genie Oil & Gas, Oyu Tolgoi/Rio Tinto, YMC,  MoEnCo, & Cover Mongolia!

Kindly,

Ms. Tumenbayar Nyamaa

We have some fantastic news to share...  First of all, thanks to our Chairwoman, Ms. Tumenbayar, we reached out to one of the “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” nominees as chosen by WIM UK, Ms. Oyun Sanjaasuren, Minister of the Environment and Green Development Ministry, Member of the Mongolian Parliament, and President of the Mongolian Geological Association.

We are proudly & kindly welcoming Ms. Oyun Sanjaasuren as WIM Mongolia’s first Honorary Advisor to our organization

Ms. Oyun is a Mongolian Member of Parliament and a leading female politician. Her background in mining following her PhD in Geology at Cambridge has uniquely positioned her to focus on the development of Mongolia's extremely rich soil. Ms. Oyun graduated in geochemistry at the Charles University of Prague. In 1996, she earned a PhD in Geology from the University of Cambridge. She began her career at multinational mining company Rio Tinto and then transitioned into politics, following her brother, a prominent Mongolian politician in the 1990s. Ms. Oyun founded the Civil Will Party and has chaired a number of key standing committees, focusing in particular on legislation to improve anti-corruption, election financing and the Millennium Development Goals. In 2006, Ms. Oyun was selected as a Young Global Leader (YGL) by Davos World Economic Forum (WEF). She has been an active member of the YGL community since.

Ms. Oyun has demonstrated leadership in both the political and business realms. Having started her new post as a Minister of Environment and Green Development, she is committed to implementing new regulations to protect the mining environment. The mining environment is one of the crucial issues in the recent Mongolian mining boom and Ms. Oyun stands out as a leader in this area.

Second, we have finalized our five-member Board of Directors. At the moment, we are proudly represented by two foreign ladies, one from Australia and one representing China/Hong Kong, two Mongolian women located in USA and Canada, a Mongolian expat working in UB at Rio Tinto and four prominent Mongolian professionals from a leading law firm, a management consulting firm, senior lawyer at MCS (one of the best managed Mongolian world class company which is involved in Mongolian managed coking coal mining) and a capital markets professional/expert from FRC (Mongolian Financial Regulatory Commission). With this diverse background, we are aiming to have inclusive decision-making expertise at our organization. The structure of the organization will take the form of a roundtable and not that of a top-down military like organization.  We’ll be meeting in March and sign our incorporation act!!! Stay tuned in March for further details of WIM Mongolia.

Lastly, we will be attending our first international conference from March 2-5th in Toronto, Canada. We are part of the Mongolia@PDAC 2014 event on March 4th, 2014. The venue is the King II Room, Mezzanine Level, Hyatt Regency Toronto on King Street, a short walk from the Toronto Convention Centre.  On March 4, registration check-in starts at 1:00 PM; speakers, panels, and Q&A, 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM; networking reception, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. If you have any questions about the program, contact Counselor Maxim Berdichevsky, Canadian Embassy/UB ([email protected]) Steve Saunders, NAMBC ([email protected]) or Bolor Sambuu, WIM Mongolia at [email protected].

Happy International Women’s Day on March 8th !

Amar baina uu?

As many of you know, Mongolia is celebrating lunisolar calendar based New Year on January 31st, 2014. Many of us are busy with preparations of buuz (Mongolian dumplings) and trying to close out some of unfinished matters. Every household is busy with cleaning and planning for a great Year of the Horse!!! “Tsagaan Sar” is the first day of the spring month and “Bituun” is the Mongolian New Year’s Eve, a holiday that is very much like Christmas Eve when Mongolians spend time with their closest friends and family.

For newcomers to Mongolia, on November 28th 2013, Parliament made amendments to the law on public holidays which now allow celebrations of Tsagaan Sar nationwide over three consecutive days. Thus, this year all Mongolia-Russia & Mongolia-China border checkpoints are closed for three days starting from January 31st to February 2nd of 2014.

Stay tuned in February!!! We’ll unveil our Board of Directors, 10 Committee Chairs and lastly six international branches.

Happy Tsagaan Sar!!!
